MMI3G does not work or malfunctions (4F, 4L) Release date: 03-Jul-2012
Customer statement / workshop findings
On vehicles already equipped with software version SW0174 or SW0175 in diagnosis address 5F of the information control unit this TPI must not be used.
Ignoring this can change the software part number in the control unit, which can lead to problems when working with SVM.
Failures or malfunctions of the MMI.
• The MMI picture freezes, the sound continues, but there is no response to pressing the control panel. After a reset (pressing 3 buttons or automatically) or longer breaks (bus silence) the MMI works again.
or
• The picture of the parking assistance or rear-view camera does not switch off when driving forward, the sound the last source runs on but no response to pressing the control panel. After a reset (pressing 3 buttons or automatically) or longer breaks (bus silence) the MMI works again.
or
• The MMI picture becomes blank, the sound continues, but there is no response to pressing the control panel. After a reset (pressing 3 buttons or automatically) or longer breaks (bus silence) the MMI works again.
or
• After removing the ignition key the MMI does not switch off or only with a few minutes delay.
or
• The MMI sporadically does not work - no apiculture, no sound, no response to pressing the control panel. After a reset (pressing 3 buttons or automatically) or longer breaks (bus silence) the MMI works again.
or
• The MMI repeatedly restarts. Plopping noise during the restart.
or
• The sound of the MMI fails. After longer breaks (bus silence) the sound works again.
or
• The picture of the MMI has several green squares.
or
• The MMI fails completely - no picture, no sound, no response to pressing the control panel. No access to diagnosis address 5F.
Vehicles with MMI3G (
PR numbers 7T2, 8YQ, 8AJ) are affected.
This TPI must only be used, if one of the above complaints precisely applies. If the complaint differs, perform the fault finding without this TPI. Correct sent-in parts will be redebited.
Do not use this TPI for complaints because of a flat battery. Possibly existing breakdown reporting obligations must be observed.
Technical background
Incorrect hardware and software.
Production change
New MMI software.
Measure
On vehicles with the
PR number SK6, preparation for rear-view camera, the MMI software update must only be carried out after the installation of the rear-view camera control unit. Check therefore whether for this vehicle an open service measure is shown.
Complete the following steps in the stated sequence:
1. Check first whether the MMI can still be switched on or works again after a reset, bus silence or terminal 30 reset.
a. MMI can be operated, continue with 2.
b. MMI cannot be operated
The work must be completed in the specified sequence. If this is ignored data in the new infotainment control unit 1 may be lost.
b1: Start the test programme "replace control unit" for the infotainment control unit 1.
"Guided functions ==> select brand ==> select variant ==> select engine code
==> read control units ==> select 5F infotainment control unit 1
==> replace 5F control unit"
b2:Replace the infotainment control unit 1 according to the instructions of the test programme "replace 5F control unit" . This test programme must be performed right to the end. After completing this test programme further programmes are added to the test plan. Complete them as well.
b3: Check the software to establish whether an additional software update is necessary.
b4: If you get for one or several control units of the MMI the message "hardware to be checked has been recognised" or the proposal to perform a software update, continue with 3.
b5: If no software update is necessary, continue with 7.
2. On vehicles with MMI navigation Plus (8YQ or 8AJ) a back-up of the customer data must be performed, as they are lost during the repair. After the repair the data must be reimported. The back-up is described in the updating instructions of TPI 2019922.
3. Establish in diagnosis address 5F the software version of the control unit for information electronics 1.
a. MMI Navigation (7T2) SW version 108, 144, 147, 166 or 175, continue with 4.
b. MMI Navigation (7T2) SW version 45, 48 or 50
b1: Update the MMI3G software according to the instructions in TPI 2019922
with Update CD 8R0 906 961 AA.
With software versions 45, 48 and 50 the current software cannot be directly accessed. Therefore, an intermediate update is necessary.
b2: Start a diagnosis session with the VAS diagnostic tester (self-diagnosis under
diagnosis address 5F) and end it straight away.
The diagnosis session is necessary so that the control unit for information electronics 1 works correctly after the update.
b3: continue with 4.
c. MMI Navigation Plus (8YQ or 8AJ) SW version 107, 143, 146, 167 or 174, continue with 4.
d. MMI Navigation Plus (8YQ or 8AJ) SW version 44, 47 or 49
d1: Update the MMI3G software according to the instructions in TPI 2019922
with Update CD 8R0 906 961 T.
With software versions 44, 47 and 49 the current software cannot be directly accessed. Therefore, an intermediate update is necessary.
d2: Start a diagnosis session with the VAS diagnostic tester (self-diagnosis under
diagnosis address 5F) and end it straight away.
The diagnosis session is necessary so that the control unit for information electronics 1 works correctly after the update.
d3: continue with 4.
4. Update the MMI3G software according to the instructions in TPI 2019922. Update CD/DVD see Parts information!
5. Perform a SVM feedback according to the instructions in TPI 2019922.
6. Reimport the backed-up customer data according to TPI 2019922 (only MMI navigation Plus - 8YQ or 8AJ).
After the repair must the phone must be reprogrammed and its address profile set up again.
