The titanium sponge manufacturing facility operated by the Titanium Metals Corporation (TIMET), that last remaining U.S. producer, is more than 70 years old and in need of $150 million in modernization to continue producing titanium sponge.
The current economics in the titanium sponge market, with dropping import prices and allegations of illegal subsidies, do not justify the investment needed to keep this plant operating.
